Recent clashes between the Palestinian Security Forces and Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in the Gaza Strip have left three children dead, 51 Palestinians wounded, and property damaged.
On July 14th, 2005 at approximately 7:00 PM armed clashes broke out between Hamas and Palestinian security forces, as the latter tried to prevent members of Izz Ad Din Al Qassam brigade, the military wing of Hamas, from firing locally made rockets at Israeli settlements in the northern area of the Gaza Strip.
Five of the Hamas members reported injured were driven to Kamal Odwan Hospital, in Beit Lahia and Al Shifa Hospital, in Gaza.
According to hospital officials, two of the members sustained serious injuries.
In retaliation, Hamas members attacked two locations operated by Palestinian security forces in Northern Gaza.
Mamdouh Hasaballah, a 16-year old, from Jabalia died after he was run over by a vehicle involved in the altercation.
Two members of the security forces were also injured in the attacks.
In addition, two vehicles owned by the military intelligence forces and a building were set on fire.
On 15th July 2005, at 5:30 AM, armed clashes broke out in the Az-Zaitun and As-Sabra neighborhoods in Gaza City.
Mohammad Al Amarin, 14-years old and another unidentified child were killed and 43 were injured.
A photographer for Ramatan Agency was attacked and his video tapes stolen.
Armored vehicles and two jeeps belonging to the Palestinian Security Forces were set on fire.
Houses and public areas in the area also sustained damage.
Al Mezan urges the PNA to immediately begin investigations, publicize their findings and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Gravely concerned about the threat these violent actions pose to the security situation in Gaza, Al Mezan calls upon the PNA to take the necessary steps to enforce the rule of law and achieve internal peace in the OPT.
Al Mezan also calls upon all political factions to uphold the law and prevent any attempts to wage a civil war.
Internal peace is crucial given the current situation with the Israeli occupying forces and their continued violations of human rights.
