This offensive comes after the Israeli security cabinet’s decision of 20 May 2007, in which it had decided to escalate the military attacks and large-scale operations in the Gaza Strip.
Such an escalation could result in more human rights violations and more civilian casualties.
Al Mezan expresses its concern over the silence of the international community regarding IOF frequent declarations of aggravating its offensive, and the IOF’s grave violation of human rights in the OPT.
Al Mezan asserts that a balance between security and human rights must be maintained at all times.
Al Mezan condemns IOF's violations of Palestinian civilians rights and their property.
It emphasizes that the killing and maiming of civilians, targeting of civilian objects, and extra-judicial assassinations constitute grave breaches to Israel's obligations under the international humanitarian law (IHL).
The international silence will only encourage the IOF to continue this offensive and disregard the rules of IHL.
Al Mezan therefore calls the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibilities, and immediately intervene to put an end to these violations and provide international protection to Palestinian civilians.
