M Friday 21 June 2002, four armed persons dressed in civil clothes broke into the German TV office in Gaza City and searched it.
They confiscated videotapes and film materials owned by the TV station.
When the station’s correspondent, Zakaria at-Talmas asked for their ID and a notice from the prosecution, they threatened with armed force.
The four persons claimed orally that they were from the General Investigation Department in the Palestinian Police, but did not show any ID.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns this illegal deed, which took place out of the due process.
It constitutes a dangerous infringement of the freedom of journalism in the OPTs .
The assault also constitutes a breach of Articles (39 and 40) of the Palestinian Criminal Law, according to which police forces are not to enter private places or property without a causative notice from the prosecution or the presence of the prosecutor.
Al Mezan calls upon the Palestinian parties of specialty to hold an immediate investigation to identify the attackers and brings them to justice.
The center emphasizes the necessity of the respect of the respect for law in the Palestinian society and calls all the persons and institutions to comply with law.
