With sorrow, the Mezan Center for Human Rights received news today of the death of President Yasser Arafat, the leader who brought our Palestinian national struggle to the forefront of international affairs.
Mr.
Arafat died in hospital in Paris, where he had been suffering from a blood disorder.
While Al Mezan mourns the passing of President Arafat, it remains firm in its conviction that respect for the rule of law in general, and for the Palestinian Constitution in particular, is the only way to assure a peaceful transfer of power.
We hope the President's lifelong contribution to the Palestinian cause will inspire Palestinians and their leadership everywhere to seek justice by establishing the necessary democratic mechanisms that will guarantee its success.
This will help ensure that the Palestinian People are accorded their legitimate human and civil rights by all Palestinian authorities.
In this critical time, Al Mezan calls upon the Palestinian National Authority, the political parties and all the effective powers of the Palestinian community to unite in order to create the internal stability necessary for guaranteeing respect for human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
We must demonstrate our strength through social and political cohesion and respect for the law internally if we are to effectively oppose the arbitrary, undemocratic and lawless brutality of our oppressors.
