Recent violent armed clashes between Palestinian security forces and the Islamic resistance movement, Hamas, have left ten Palestinians injured three cars damaged and a research center torched.
On July 19 2005, at approximately 3am, armed clashes broke out between members of Hamas and Palestinian security forces in Jabalia refugee camp, in the north of the Gaza Strip.
As a result, one Hamas member was wounded.
Around the same time, a group of individuals wearing masks broke into and set fire to the Arab Center for Research and Studies, near Al Quds Open University in Gaza City.
The Center is run by the Islamic Khalas party At approximately 3.
30am, a group of unknown persons burned a white Subaro car, owned by a Hamas.
In response, a number of Hamas members and supporters gathered near the marketplace in Jabalia refugee camp and proceeded to set fire to a car belonging to the head of the north Gaza governorate branch of the Fatah youth organization.
Roughly an hour later, clashes resumed near the Al Awda hospital in the Tel Al Zaatar area of Jabalia.
In total, some 10 people were injured, including two Hamas members, six members of the Palestinian security forces, one policeman, and a civilian.
A Savannah car belonging to the Palestinian security forces was also set alight.
According to information given to the Center, two RPG missiles were fired at the car.
Finally, at around 4.
40am, another group of masked persons attacked a BMW car on Ezz Eddin Al Qassam Street, in Gaza City.
Two people inside the car were severely injured and other cars nearby were badly damaged.
Al Mezan strongly condemns these violent actions, which seriously jeopardize the personal and societal safety of Palestinians.
These acts converts residential areas into a battlefield, threatening the safety of all those living in these areas.
Al Mezan calls upon the Palestinian National Authority to assume its responsibility by upholding the law and working to prevent these violations of Palestinian human rights.
It also demands the PNA put an end to the spread of weapons in the Gaza Strip, by confiscating unlicensed weapons and punishing members of security bodies who carry their weapons after work.
The PNA must also hold members of the security forces legally responsible for improperly discharging their weapons.
Al Mezan emphasizes the need to bring perpetrators of these violations to justice.
