On Thursday 13 December 2007, a group of armed men attempted to kidnap 45-year-old Mr.
Walid Al Awadi.
Al Awadi is a member of the Political Bureau of the People's Party and a member of the Palestinian National Council.
According to a statement given by Al Awdai to Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, at approximately 9.
30am on Thursday three armed men obstructed him by their car way as he was driving near the Az Zahraa Town junction, at the coastal road south of Gaza City.
Al Awadi was on his way to work at the Office of the National Council, which is located inside the building of the Palestinian Legislative Council in Ar-Rimal neighborhood in Gaza City.
Al Awadi was driving his own car with his 20-year-old daughter, Tamara, who was on her way to university, when the kidnapping attempt occurred.
The armed men stopped the car and tried to pull Al Awadi out of it.
They quarreled with each other and many people gathered in the place.
They then fled the place without kidnapping him.
Al Mezan condemns the attempted kidnapping of Al Awadi, which is viewed in the context of increased acts kidnapping of citizens in Gaza.
This incident becomes more serious given that Awadi is a prominent political figure in the Gaza Strip.
As such, Al Mezan calls for a prompt, serious investigation into the incident to ensure the protection of citizens under the law.
Those who are found to be involved in the attempted kidnapping must be brought to justice without delay.
Al Meza also warns about overlooking such conducts, which will only encourage them to spread again.
