On Monday, 30 June 2008, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights organized a training workshop on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and protection of medical personnel.
Twenty-two professionals in the field of medicine and health participated in the training.
The workshop set out to educate health workers from various health institutions and associations about the historical, moral and legal frameworks of IHL.
They were trained in the protection afforded to medical personnel under IHL especially during times of armed conflict and occupation.
Participants discussed the current situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), particularly the targeting of ambulance crews by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) that has killed staff and damaged ambulances.
Participants reviewed the effectiveness of IHL enforcement mechanisms in the Palestinian case.
The workshop is part of the Center's activities that falls under the "Promotion of IHL and ESCR by Education in Gaza" project.
Supported by Diakonia, it aims to raise awareness of IHL in the Palestinian community in the Gaza Strip.
The workshop was held at Al Mezan Center in Gaza City.
