Gaza, 10 January 2024 — Al Mezan joins the global community in mourning the passing of Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. In a world often reluctant to acknowledge the realities faced by Palestinians, President Carter stood out as a voice of truth and moral integrity. President Carter was one of the first prominent international figures to boldly recognize and describe Israel’s treatment of Palestinians what it is: apartheid.
His landmark 2006 book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, brought critical global attention to the systematic injustices and human rights violations faced by Palestinians living under Israel’s apartheid regime. His voice reminded the world that peace is unattainable without justice, accountability, addressing systemic injustice, and upholding the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, including the right to self-determination.
Through the Carter Center, the non-governmental organization founded by President Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter, President Carter actively supported Al Mezan’s work in documenting human rights violations and advocating for compliance with international law in Gaza for many years.
“President Carter's voice was a guiding light during dark times, embodying hope that justice and humanity will triumph over Israel’s apartheid and the occupation. His unwavering dedication to justice, peace, and Palestinian rights remains an enduring inspiration. We extend our deepest condolences as we honor his remarkable legacy,” said Issam Younis, Al Mezan’s Director.
Al Mezan extends heartfelt condolences to President Carter’s family, friends, the Carter Center, and all who were touched by his work. We honor his memory by reaffirming our commitment to the principles he championed and by continuing to advocate for accountability, justice, and human rights for the Palestinian people.
May he rest in peace.
