News Brief: Al Mezan publishes a research paper on journalism ethics and standards

On Wednesday, 28 April 2021, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan) published a research paper on journalism ethics and standards. The paper discusses a set of essential ethical norms and standards for journalists in view of the upcoming Palestinian parliamentary and presidential elections. 

 

The paper presents an overview of the first code of ethics in media written nearly a century ago, and then discusses the evolution of both national and international ethical systems that enunciate the principles of ethics and good practice applicable to journalists, including the journalistic codes of ethics in Palestinian law as well as relevant international conventions. 

 

The paper also focuses on the principles of ethical and professional media coverage and reporting of the elections by addressing issues such as hate speech, bullying, incitement, racial discrimination, and misleading information.

 

Al Mezan maintains that promoting journalism ethics and standards plays a significant role in enhancing the protection of the freedom of the press by deterring any government-instigated human rights violations should journalists break their ethical codes.
