Appeal for Comprehensive Local Elections

Ramallah / Today, several human rights organizations involved in election monitoring have called on Prime Minister, Dr. Rami Al-Hamdullah, to conduct local elections throughout occupied Palestine. This appeal came after the decision of the Supreme Court on Monday, 3 October, to hold elections in the West Bank, but not the Gaza Strip.

Conducting local elections in the northern governorates while suspending elections in the southern governorates would increase fragmentation of the occupied Palestinian territory. The national coalition government, which works partially in the two sides of the country, could lose the gains achieved in unifying at the government level, without taking steps to achieve unity within the legislative and judicial authorities.   

The appeal indicated that holding local elections in all districts of the country would lay the groundwork for a future presidential and parliamentary election and for restoring unity, the main task that the national coalition government was formed to carry out.      

The institutions that signed the appeal are the Independent Commission for Human Rights, Al-Marsad Arab World for Democracy and Elections, National Election Observation Committee, Collation for Accountability and Integrity "Aman", Human Rights Organizations Council, Jerusalem Legal Aid Center, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, the Palestinian Center for the Independence of the Judiciary and the Legal Profession-Musawa.
