On Thursday 25 February 2010, Mr.
Issam Younis, the director of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, and Mr.
Khalil Abu Shammala, the director of Al Dameer for Human Rights, met Mr.
Michael Martin, the Irish Foreign Minister, and the accompanying delegation at the UNRWA office in Gaza .
Younis and Abu Shammala described to the delegation the human rights situation in the Gaza Strip and the devastating impacts of the continued closure and collective punishment imposed by Israel on civilians in Gaza, which puts the population in jeopardy and affect all aspects of life in the Strip .
They asserted that this collective punishment breaches the rules of international law.
They also described the Israeli crimes committed against the Palestinian civilians; the role of the international community and its tolerance of the Israeli crimes particularly the building of settlements, the judaization of Jerusalem, and the building of the segregation wall.
Younis and Abu Shammala called upon Europe to act effectively to enforce the international law and achieve justice .
They also said that the failure of the international community to fulfill its obligations towards civilians in the occupied territories undermines international security and peace.
The Irish Foreign Minister expressed his concerns to at what he saw and heard and he asserted that Ireland is seeking to play an effective role in the occupied Palestinian territories.
