Al Mezan calls for investigation into the death of inmate held in Gaza’s Ansar Prison

On Sunday morning, 16 October 2022, the Palestinian Ministry of Interior announced the death of detainee Nasser Suleiman Salem Abu Obeid, 52, at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, following a sudden deterioration in his health condition. The police opened an investigation into the incident.

 

According to Al Mezan’s investigation, Abu Obeid had been detained since 7 September 2022, for harboring a fugitive. The warden of Ansar Prison said that at around 3:15 am on Friday, 14 October 2022, Abu Obeid experience chest pains and informed the prison administration, which admitted him to Al-Shifa Hospital. At approximately 7 am on Sunday, 16 October 2022, medical sources announced his death from a heart attack.  

 

Al Mezan regrets the death of Abu Obeid and calls on the Public Prosecution to launch a swift and thorough investigation into the incident. Al Mezan reiterates that every death in custody must be investigated swiftly and transparently in accordance with the law and that the results must be properly shared with the public.
