Press Release: Three fishermen killed by suspected errant missile

Al Mezan calls for an investigation and accountability of perpetrators

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan) expresses grave concern over the death of three fishermen, whose boat exploded off the coast of Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, on 7 March 2021. The explosion was likely caused by an errant missile fired from the shore.

 

According to available field information, in the early morning of Sunday, 7 March 2021, the three men—Mohammed Hijazi al-Laham, 27, his brother Zakaria, 24, and nephew, Yahya, 29—were sailing around two miles offshore when their boat exploded. They were killed instantly and their bodies were later transferred to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. Eyewitnesses reported that some Palestinian militant groups fire missiles and other projectiles from that area into the sea as part of their training.    

 

The spokesman of the Ministry of Interior in Gaza, Iyad al-Buzom, announced an investigation into the incident. Al Mezan has contacted several government agencies to gather additional information about the investigation, including the Ministry’s media office, but no official response was given.

 

In extending its deepest condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families, Al Mezan reiterates its grave concern over the growing number of victims from the recurrence of this type of event. It is essential that a thorough, credible and transparent investigation is launched and that the perpetrators are held accountable. Al Mezan also calls for the implementation of more stringent and rigorous measures to be put in place to protect civilians and their properties.
