A ten-year-old girl was pronounced dead at Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza at approximately 11:10pm on Thursday, 9 July 2020. The body of the deceased had been admitted to the hospital with signs of bruising before it was transferred to the Forensic Department which identified injuries (sustained from severe beating) as the cause of death.
Police spokesperson, Ayman al-Batniji, issued a press statement confirming that the police has launched an investigation into the incident and indicated that the girls’ father is the suspect. He has been apprehended accordingly, and due process is taking its course.
Al Mezan strongly condemns the heinous crime and is deeply concerned over the persistence of abuse against children and women and their exposure to physical and psychological violence.
Al Mezan further stresses that such crimes against children and women are unjustifiable, and calls on the competent authorities to enforce the full process of law without discrimination and without resorting to unacceptable ‘extenuating circumstances’ that have been used to justify laxity when prosecuting perpetrators of such criminal acts. Al Mezan also calls on the competent authorities to prioritize the safety of children and women by enacting legislations and amending existing laws in line with international laws and treaties, especially the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to which the State of Palestine has acceded.
