Ahmed Shukri Abu Amra, an 18-year-old prison inmate, was found dead on Friday morning, 29 May 2020, at Deir al-Balah Prison “Reform and Rehabilitation Center”. The prison’s legal department stated that the deceased was found hanging from a bathroom window.
He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Al-Aqsa Hospital, and his body was then transferred to the Forensic Department at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City to undergo autopsy in order to identify the cause of death. According to Al Mezan’s investigation, the external forensic examination concluded that, apart from marks around the neck, the body showed no signs of bruising or abrasions. The forensic examiner is yet to release a final autopsy report.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights regrets the death of Ahmed Abu Amra, and calls for a serious, prompt, and thorough investigation into the incident. Al Mezan also asserts its commitment to follow up with the competent authorities and share updates on the case once received.
