Al Mezan: Authorities under Obligation to Investigate, Bring Perpetrators to Justice
7 November 2019 |Reference 95/2019
At around 8:40pm on Wednesday, 6 November 2019, the dead body of 18-year-old girl R.K. was brought to the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah town, in the Middle Gaza District.
Al Mezan’s documentation shows that the body of the deceased arrived at the hospital with bruises in different parts of the body. The police has launched an investigation into the incident, arrested a number of suspects of murder. The deceased body was referred to Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City for forensic examination.
The Department of Forensic Medicine at Al-Shifa Hospital stated that the cause of the death of the girl is a hemorrhagic shock due to exposure to severe beating.
Al Mezan’s documentation shows that since the beginning of 2019, six women cases have been reported in the context of domestic violence.
Al Mezan considers that Palestine’s accession to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women obliges the authorities to deal with acts of murder of women as serious crimes regardless the motivations behind them. Al Mezan stresses that crimes against women are unjustifiable, and calls on the competent authorities to enforce the full process of law without discrimination and without resort to unacceptable ‘extenuating circumstances’ that are frequently used as excuses to being lax with perpetrators of criminal acts against women, including murder.
