Al Mezan Organizes Workshop on the “Civil Society and Reconciliation: Expectations and Hopes”

On Sunday, 22 June 2014, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights on civil society and Palestinian reconciliation, focusing on the expectations from , and the role of civil society organizations.
The workshop was held at the Commodore Hotel in Gaza City.
The workshop is part of Al Mezan’s project in cooperation with Oxfam GB, which aims to enhance the capacity of staff at civil society organizations in the field of human rights and strengthen these organizations in the Gaza Strip.
Mrs.
Shirin Shobaki, the Coordinator of the Training and Mass Communication Unit at Al Mezan, opened the workshop by welcoming the 31 participants.
Mrs.
Shobaki talked about the importance of recognizing laws that serve as a framework for the work of organizations as the laws enhance the work of the organizations and enable clear and effective planning.
Mrs.
Shobaki also discussed the importance of the workshop for staff at grass roots organizations that are located near the border.
The workshop is important as it comes amidst decisions from the former Minister of Interior in the Gaza Strip relating to NGO work.
She hoped that the participants would present their expectations about the future of the work of NGOs amidst Palestinian reconciliation.
Dr.
Adnan Al Hajjar, the Coordinator of the Studies and Research Unit at Al Mezan, presented a brief on the Palestinian law that serves as the framework for the work of organizations as it was issued in 2000.
He also highlighted the decisions which were issued lately relating to the freedom of NGO work.
At the end of the workshop, the participants expressed the need for creating committees from NGOs to organize advocacy campaigns to revoke negative decisions and policies and to work towards issuing legal protection for the freedom of work of NGOs.
