Short Link:
In an unprecedented development reflecting deterioration of the security situation in Gaza, masked men attacked an UNRWA convoy.
Mr.
John Ging, the Gaza director of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) Field Office was in the convoy, which was in the way back from Erez Crossing to Gaza City.
According to Al Mezan's field information, at app.
2.
50pm on Thursday 15 March 2007, gunmen in a white Subaru blocked the way of the convoy in Salah Ad-Din Street near Beit Hanoun and opened fire at it.
The vehicle in which Ging travelled was hit by many bullets but no casualties were reported.
Al Mezan finds this unprecedented attack on the UN Agency odd.
UNRWA provides essential services for over two thirds of the population of Gaza and Mr.
Ging has proven to be a devoted director who has worked hard to develop and improve UNRWA's services in the Gaza Strip.
While Al Mezan conveys its sincere congratulations to Mr.
Ging and the UNRWA's staff for their safety, it strongly condemns this conduct which is at odds with Palestinian laws and customs.
The Center calls on the PNA to promptly investigate this act and bring the perpetrators to justice; in a fulfilment of its obligations.
The Center reiterates its call on the PNA to seriously and effectively investigations all acts of kidnapping and armed assaults and to take the necessary steps to ensure the security and wellbeing of all the people under its jurisdiction.
This is an essential threshold towards the elimination of violence and protection of human rights in OPT.
