At approximately 11:00 am on Monday, 18 January 2016, Mahmoud Abdel Shafi Ahmed Jarghon, 3, drowned in an agricultural pool owned by his father in An-Nassr village north of Rafah. His father stated that he was running water pumps to irrigate the crops, when he saw his son lying inside the pool which was only one meter depth of water. It’s worth mentioning that the pool is not surrounded by anything safe. It’s 15 meters long, 4 meters wide and 3 meters deep and it’s made of nylon.
His father and his uncle Nedal Abu Shanab managed to recover the child from the pool and they took him to adjacent An-Nasr UNRWA clinic. Doctors tried to rescue him but they couldn’t and referred him to the Gaza European Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police arrived at the place and checked it before they allowed his family to bury the child.
