On Thursday, 11 June 2015, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights (Al Mezan) concluded a training course entitled, “Torture and Ill-treatment in Human Rights and International Law and Mechanisms of Monitoring and Documentation”, held at the Commodore Hotel in the west of Gaza City. The training was organized as part of the EU-supported project to combat torture in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).Twenty-five lawyers participated in the training course. The course provided 30 hours of training over a period of five days.
The participants received training on the International Bill of Human Rights; torture under international humanitarian law, human rights law, and international criminal law; the Convention against Torture and its Optional Protocol; the role of health professionals in detecting and combating torture; and regional, national, and international mechanisms of redress for victims of torture. The workshop also trained the participants on mechanisms of monitoring and documentation of torture and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment (CIDT).
Rami Shaqoura, the project lawyer, wrapped up the training by thanking the participants for their commitment to the course and for their efforts to make the training a success. He emphasized the importance of utilizing the newly acquired knowledge to protect human rights and to combat violations relating to torture and CIDT. Mr. Shaqoura handed out certificates of completion to the participation.
The training is part of a project that aims to combat torture and CIDT in the oPt.
