On Monday 26 December 2011, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights opened a training workshop titled “Women in Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law,” held at As-Salam restaurant in Gaza City.
This workshop is part of the “Enhancing Legal Aid for Victims of Human Rights Violations in Gaza Strip” project, implemented by Al Mezan with support from the UNDP/PAPP under the Rule of Law Program.
Ms Layal Qdeeh, a lawyer at Al Mezan, opened the workshop by welcoming the participants.
She asserted the importance of the workshop’s targeting of new university graduates in order to enhance the culture of human rights in general and of women’s rights in particular.
The workshop took place between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The participants were introduced to women’s rights under international conventions, particularly Security Council Resolution 1325 on involving women in peacekeeping and enhancing women’s role in peace and security following armed conflicts.
Salah Abdel Atti, manager of the training and cooperation unit at the Independent Commission for Citizens’ Rights, and Nadiya Abu Nahla, manager of the Women’s Affairs foundation in Gaza, will led the two sessions at the workshop.
