At approximately 9pm on Friday 27 May 2011, Anwar Ismail Mohammed Abu Ghanem, 45, who had been detained at an internal security apparatus facility in Gaza, was admitted to the Shifa Hospital in Gaza city.
According to information obtained by Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, the Abu Ghanem's family knew by coincident about his admittance at the hospital when a family member was their when he arrived at the hospital.
At approximately 11pm on the same day, the apparatus called a relative of the Abu Ghanem’s and informed him that his health had deteriorated.
According to the Abu Ghanem's family, after they visited Anwar in the hospital they, observed that his general health condition was very bad.
He looked thin and was in a comatose state.
He did not recognize his family members.
Therefore, his family asked to bring a specialized physician to examine him.
They were allowed to do so, and the doctor informed them that he suffered from cerebral bleeding.
He was then transferred to an intensive care unit at the hospital.
Medical sources informed Al Mezan that his condition was critical.
Sources at the internal security apparatus informed Al Mezan that the apparatus has initiated an internal investigation into the case.
According to Al Mezan's field investigations, at approximately 7:30pm on Thursday 14 April 2011, the internal security apparatus arrested Abu Ghanem while he was at his shop, near his house near the Jabaliya Services Club in Block (1) in Jabalia refugee camp, in North Gaza district.
They searching his house and shop and then took him to the apparatus office in the refugee camp.
The apparatus members also confiscated a laptop, a desktop, a camera, four cell phones for his family, and his private car.
They did not provide any reasons for the arrest, search or confiscation to the family.
On 20 April 2011, Abu Ghanem’s son, Jihad, 21, received a phone call from the internal security apparatus ordering him to bring an amount of USD 2,000.
An internal security apparatus member received the money and handed a receipt to his son.
According to Abu Ghanem's relatives, Anwar did not suffer from any disease or health problems before his detention.
During his detention, he was banned from meeting his lawyer.
A day before his arrival to the hospital, his family received a letter from the Military Prosecution which provided information about the reasons behind his detention.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights calls upon the Attorney General (AG) to swiftly initiate an investigation into the arrest, detention and treatment of Abu Ghanem.
It also calls on the AG to disclose the results of the investigations within a reasonable period of time and take the necessary procedures against any persons who are proved to be involved in violating the law and rules concerning the due process and treatment of persons deprived from their liberty.
Al Mezan also calls for an immediate end of the detention of civilians and presenting them before military courts regardless of their charges.
