On Monday evening, 1 May 2023, the Palestinian Ministry of Interior announced the death of detainee Awni Ahmed Al-Louh, 56, at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza following a sudden deterioration of his health condition while detained in the Military Police Rehabilitation and Reform Center in Gaza. According to Al Mezan’s available information, Al-Louh had been detained since 8 March 2023. Medical sources in the forensic medicine department stated that Al-Louh suffered from asthma and died due to an enlarged heart muscle.
Al Mezan regrets the death of Al-Louh and calls on the Palestinian Public Prosecution to launch a swift and thorough investigation into his death. We recall that every death in custody must be investigated swiftly and transparently in accordance with the law and that the results must be properly shared with the public.
