Short Link:
The Israeli Occupation Force (IOF) announced its responsibility for the extrajudicial killing of a member of the Army of Islam last Wednesday, and threatened to continue attacks against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
According to Al Mezan's field investigations, at approximately 11:30am on Wednesday 3 November 2010, an explosion took place in a car travelling on a road opposite the western gate of the police compound (Al-Jawazat) in western Gaza City.
As a result, Mohammed Jamal An-Nimnim, 27, who is known to be a member of the Army of Islam, was killed and Olfat As-Sabbagh, 21, sustained a light injury.
An-Nimnim was a resident of the Al Shati' refugee camp.
This attack comes amidst increasingly frequent statements by Israeli political and military officials threatening to continue attacks against Palestinian resistance groups.
In press statements, Israeli officials stressed what they described as the ‘advanced technical capacity’ of Palestinian resistance groups, and said that a military operation against the Gaza Strip was under consideration by Israeli officials.
Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights stresses that extrajudicial killings are illegal as they violate international law and the basic principles of human rights.
Extrajudicial killings violate the rights of those targeted, and the rights of innocent people caught in the targeted killing zone.
Al Mezan condemns the continuing Israeli attacks and the violations of international law carried out against Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) with full impunity and calls upon the international community to intervene to put an end to such violations.
Al Mezan emphasizes that the failure of the international community to act on its legal obligations towards pursuing accountability for violations committed against the civilian population in the Gaza Strip in the past has only encouraged Israel to continue its attacks.
Al Mezan warns that the continuing Israeli press statements referring to the capacity of Palestinian resistance groups in the Gaza Strip are exaggerated and represent a forewarning of a new campaign of aggression against the Strip.
Al Mezan calls upon the international community to intervene promptly to prevent any further attacks in violation of international law on the Gaza Strip and ensure the protection of the civilian population.
