Short Link:
On Monday 13 June 2010, the Secretary General of the Arab League, Mr.
Amr Mossa, ended his 12-hour visit to the Gaza Strip.
This is the first visit of a Secretary General of the Arab League to the Gaza Strip.
The visit comes after three years of Palestinian internal division and Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights expressed its great welcome to the Secretary-General for his visit.
Al Mezan hopes that this visit will contribute to ending the Palestinian internal split, mobilizing all Arab efforts to put an end to the Palestinian suffering in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt), and to end the illegal Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.
Al Mezan emphasizes that ending the Israeli siege should form the first step towards putting an end to the Palestinian suffering, ending the Israeli occupation on the oPt, and enabling the Palestinian people to enjoy their inalienable rights, at the top of which is the right to self- determination and to create an independent State of Palestine.
Al Mezan points out that the current situation in the Gaza Strip should not be dealt with as just a humanitarian situation that requires easing the restrictions on movement.
The current situation in Gaza is a primarily political and legal one, and should be resolved accordingly.
In this context Al Mezan notes that there are a number of measures that the Arab League can utilize to contribute to ending the occupation and ensuring accountability for the ongoing violations of international law.
These include UN resolutions, the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which is considered an effective measure to confront the occupation and its policy, and the report of the international Investigation committee lead by Judge Richard Goldstone, particularly its recommendations which stress the need for accountability.
Therefore, Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights calls on the Secretary General, with his important political and personal clout, and the symbolic significance of his post, to visit Gaza again and to intensify the efforts to end the internal split which weakens the Palestinian and Arab positions in ending the Israeli siege and occupation.
