Short Link:
Israeli prison administrations have announced a state of emergency in a number of prisons and detention camps following the detention of the Israeli soldier on June 26th; prisoners have been prevented from meeting lawyers and families, their personal belongings have been confiscated and Arab TV channels have been diconnected.
The IOF have detained 86 Palestinians who are located in 28 prisons and detention camps; around 115 female prisoners are in Hasharon, Al Ramala prisons and in solitary confinement; around 288 children are in Ofar, Mejdu and Al Naqab, while 1000 prisoners are suffering from incurable diseases.
The decision of prison adminsitrations constitutes a breach of minimum international humanitarian standards in dealing with prisoners as described in the fourth Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War and the International Convention of Civil and Political Rights, most notably article 7 which states:" No one is to be subjected to torture, mistreatment, harsh or inhuman punishment and humiliation"
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns this violation of prisoners' rights; it calls upon the international community to intervene to halt Israel's flagrant violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) and of standards related to the treatment of prisoners.
