Today, Wednesday, 2 July 2008, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights organized a lecture on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) at the Women Activities Center (WAC) in Beit Hanoun.
Twenty-one women affiliated the WAC services attended the lecture, which is part of the activities under the "Promotion of IHL and ESCR by Education in Gaza" project.
In collaboration with Al Mezan, Diakonia supports the ongoing project.
The lecture aimed at raising awareness about IHL, its sources, basic principles and content.
Participants learned about special protection that IHL provides for civilians; particularly women and children, during times of war and occupation.
During the lecture, the participants discussed the IHL violations committed by the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF), especially against the vulnerable populations of women and children in the Gaza Strip.
They also discussed the protection of civilians under IHL.
At the end, they stressed the significant role the international community should play as a responsible party for ensuring adequate protection of civilians under occupation and ensuring Israel's compliance with the principles of IHL.
