At 4pm on Friday, 5 October 2018, Israeli forces based in monitoring sites opened fire and launched tear gas canisters at hundreds of Palestinians joining the Great Return March demonstration in east Abu Safia area in east Jabalia refugee camp in North Gaza district. 62 protesters, including 15 children, were injured in the Israeli forces’ shooting. Doctors at the Indonesia and Al-Awda hospitals stated the casualties ranged in severity from moderate to severe. 45 of the injured were wounded by live fire, including nine children, and 14 were hit directly by tear gas canisters—of them six children. One protesters suffered from major breathing difficulties due to Israeli forces’ heavy use of tear gas. Two others suffered from bone breaking while trying to escape Israeli forces’ shooting. Other protesters who suffered from the tear gas received the necessary treatment by field-based medical teams. The Israeli forces’ shooting continued until the evening of the same day.
