On Thursday evening, 30 October 2008, the Gaza government freed 17 political prisoners, including 7 leaders of Fateh movement.
Another two persons who had been granted temporary permission to leave detention were also set free for a short time before they would return to prison.
With those two, the number of freed political prisoners reached 19.
Prime Minister of the Gaza Government, Ismael Haniya, announced that the release of those political prisoners comes in line with preparations for encouraging the success of the inter-Palestinian dialogue, which is sponsored by Egypt.
Al Mezan Center welcomes the Gaza government's initiative and the release of political prisoners.
It calls the government in Ramallah and President Mahmoud Abbas to do the same in the West Bank.
The Center calls for ending the political detention in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
The Center notes that politically motivated detention is criminalized by Palestinian law as well as the human rights standards.
Every person deprived of his or her freedom is accorded the right to a just due process by Palestinian law and must not be deprived from it.
