At approximately 2:45 pm on Wednesday, 20 February 2013, Jenan Ahmed Abu Hlaiel, three days old, was admitted to Kamal Odwan Hospital after sustaining burns to her body.
Medical sources described her injury as critical and referred her to Shifa Hospital for treatment.
In the evening hours on the same day, Shifa Hospital pronounced her dead.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, electricity was cut off at the time and the bedroom in which Jenan rested was dark, with one candle lit.
The candle ignited the blanket covering the infant.
Jenan’s father subsequently suffered from a nervous breakdown.
Jenan’s twin sisters were survived by this incident.
