At approximately 4:00 pm on Friday 23 March 2012, the Internal Security Apparatus banned a commemoration ceremony for ‘Aref Abdel ‘Aziz Naji (also known as Kamal Medhat), a deceased Fatah leader.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, Naji’s relatives had invited Fatah activists and local community members to their house, located in Block 9 of Jabaliya refugee camp in North Gaza district, to participate in the commemoration ceremony.
The relatives were later surprised to receive phone calls from persons introducing themselves as members of the Internal Security Apparatus, who ordered them to cancel the ceremony, on the pretext of security reasons and lack of official permission.
The Naji family insisted on holding the ceremony, stating that it was a private family matter that would be held in the house.
The Apparatus then threatened to suppress the ceremony and told the family members that they would be held responsible for the consequences.
