On three days during the past week, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday 19, 20, and 21 September 2011, Israeli naval vessels patrolling the Gaza sea opened fire on Palestinian fishing boats while they were in the As-Sudanyia area to the northwest of Al Waha resort, west of Beit Lahyia, in North Gaza district.
The heaviest attack was at approximately 7:00 am on Tuesday 20 September 2011.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, there is a heavy IOF presence deployed in the area.
These forces deliberately open fire directly at Palestinian fishermen and chase them to the beach in order to destroy their fishing nets.
Fishermen drop their nets in the sea to catch crabs, which are found in large numbers near the beach at this time of the year.
The IOF often destroys their fishing nets and/or takes them away, in addition to opening fire on Palestinian fishermen for sustained periods of time.
Fishermen therefore lose their source of income and have their lives threatened, as they abandon their work for fear of Israeli attacks.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, four fishermen lost their netsduring the most recent episode in the ongoing Israeli attacks.
Al Mezan has identified them as follows: ·         Mohammed Mohammed As-Sultan; ·         As’ad Mohammed As-Sultan; ·         Abdel Bari Mohammed As-Sultan; and ·         Abdel Hafez As-Sultan.
Another nine fishermen had their nets torn up.
Al Mezan has identified them as follows: 1.
       Shareef Mohammed As-Sultan; 2.
       Kusai Mohammed As-Sultan; 3.
       Mohammed Ahmed As-Sultan; 4.
       Abdel Fattah As-Sultan; 5.
       Mohammed Ali As-Sultan; 6.
       Mohammed Mohammed Zayed; 7.
       Juma’ Ahmed Zayed; 8.
       Husam Mohammed Zayed; and 9.
       Mahmoud Ismail Zayed.
