On Tuesday, 22 February 2022, 19-year-old detainee Fadi al-Abbasi was pronounced dead at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.
In a press statement on Tuesday evening, the Ministry of Interior announced al-Abbasi’s death, confirming that he had hung himself while in custody. He was immediately taken to the hospital. The Ministry added that an investigation had been opened into the incident. According to the superintendent of the Khan Younis Reform and Rehabilitation Center, the deceased was imprisoned on 10 January 2022 on criminal charges.
Al Mezan calls on the Public Prosecution to launch a swift, thorough, and credible investigation into the incident and to publicly release its findings.
