Al Mezan Holds Awareness-Raising Session on Child Rights and International Child Protection Mechanisms for CBOs Professionals

Gaza City, 25 October 2018 – Al Mezan Center for Human Rights held an awareness-raising session for CBOs professionals working with children in access-restricted areas (ARA). Over two days, 24 professionals, half of them female, gained understanding of child rights and were introduced to international mechanisms of child rights. The session was organized at Roots Hotel in Gaza City between 23 and 24 October 2018.

 

The workshop was inaugurated by Mrs. Shirin Al-Shobaki, the Coordinator of the Training and Mass Communication Unit at Al Mezan, who first briefed attendees about the importance of gaining familiarity with child rights and  IHL’s essential principles of protecting children in contexts of armed conflict. Ms. Al-Shobaki expressed hope that participants would be enabled to bring to their work with children their newly-gained knowledge.

 

On the first day, Mr. Saber Al-Nairab, from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, presented on UN conventions, procedures, and mechanisms which are at place to ensure child protection. He explained how these can be used in effect to protect children, especially through reporting to UN special rapporteur on children.

 

On the second day, Mrs. Al-Shobaki elaborated to participants on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, explaining its objectives and the importance of states’ subscription to it. Then, Mr. Gharib Al-Sinwar, from Al Mezan’s Field Work Unit, engaged participants in discussion of monitoring, documentation, and reporting tools, and introduced them to the UN Security Council Resolution 1612.

 

The session, part of Al Mezan’s mission to promote human rights and IHL in the Gaza Strip, was supported by Save the Children under the project “Gaza Preparedness and Early Action 2018”.
