Al Mezan Warns of Abuse of Civil and Political Rights in Light of Growing Internal Political Disputes

On Monday, 24 September 2018, the security apparatus in the Gaza Strip summoned a number of activists affiliated with Fatah Movement, the political rival of the Hamas de facto government in Gaza. Eleven activists are still being held in detention at the time of publication.

 

Documentation by Al Mezan Center for Human Rights shows that 51 Fatah activists received summons orders and a number of activists received warning phone calls from the local security apparatus in Gaza. The activists were warned not to organize any popular activities that would show support for the Palestinian President while he addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, 27 September 2018.

 

Al Mezan received documentation from partner organizations in the West Bank stating that 60 persons affiliated with Hamas Movement were summoned—a number of them remain in detention at the time of publication.

 

Al Mezan condemns the campaign to summons and detain affiliates of political rivals and warns that citizens’ civil and political rights must not be abused, especially as part of a political agenda. Al Mezan calls on competent authorities to immediately stop the campaign and release all detainees. The rule of law and due process must be respected at all times.
