On 22 August 2017, Israeli authorities denied exit from Gaza to Dr. Kamal Al Sharafi, Advisor to the Palestinian President on Human Rights and the President of Al-Aqsa University, and Dr. Zakaria Al-Agha, member of the Executive Committee of the PLO and Head of the Palestinian Department for Refugee Affairs. The incident took place at around 11 am when Dr. Al Sharafi and Dr. Al-Agha were on their way to the West Bank on a work trip. They were given no justification for the denial. It should be noted that both Dr. Al Sharafi and Dr. Al-Agha carry Palestinian diplomatic passports.

Al Mezan strongly condemns Israel’s denial of the right to free movement, which impacts all Palestinian residents of Gaza, and stresses that these arbitrary procedures deprive Palestinians of their basic rights—including rights to health, education and family life, which are rooted in access to free movement—are in violation of international law.

Al Mezan calls on the international community to take immediate steps to stop the collective punishment of Palestinians that is a result of the closure of Gaza and demands that it is lifted.
