At 9:30 am on Monday, 15 June 2015, the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights opened a workshop on torture awareness and mechanisms of redress for victims and at-risk communities, at Laterna restaurant in Gaza City. Approximately 25 Palestinian ex-detainees, patients, and fishermen attended the awareness-raising workshop.
Rami Shaqoura, the project’s lawyer, opened the workshop by welcoming the participants and presenting the workshop schedule. The first session covered the practice and techniques of torture, the Israeli practices, and the mechanisms of legal redress. The second session covered rehabilitation of victims of torture and ill-treatment, and its importance for recovery.
In the second session, Mr. Hasan Ziyada from the Gaza Community Mental Health Program (GCMHP), talked about rehabilitation therapy for victims of torture; the impacts and symptoms of the practice; and how to treat and rehabilitate the victim.
The participants also talked together about the various practices used against them by Israeli authorities and shared personal accounts of physical and psychological effects from the torture and ill-treatment.
Samir Al Manama, lawyer and field worker at Al Mezan on the project, talked about the importance of raising awareness of human rights actors on the practices and laws behind torture and ill-treatment in order to prompt documentation of the violation, legal aid, and referral to GCMHP, with the aim of decreasing the practice of torture.
