Al Mezan Calls for End to Political Summonses and Detentions

At approximately 9:00 am on Monday 15 October 2012, Gaza’s Internal Security Apparatus summoned for the fourth time Fayiz Mohammed Abu 'Itta, 43, the spokesperson of Fatah movement to its office in Jabaliya refugee camp.
When Abu ‘Itta presented himself at the Apparatus office, they ordered him to come back at 2:00 pm on the same day.
When he returned back, the Apparatus detained him for several hours and released him at approximately 6:00 pm on the same day.
According to information available to the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, Abu ‘Itta was detained in a room in the apparatus building and he was interrogated about his recent political speech.
It’s worth noting that the Apparatus had ordered Abu ‘Itta not to talk about political issues.
The summons of Abu ‘Itta comes in the context of clear escalation for summonses and detentions for political affiliation or opinion in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
These summonses are increased due to Palestinian internal split.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the illegal summonses and detentions of a political nature.
Al Mezan calls on both governments in the West Bank and Gaza Strip to take procedures that ensure the respect of law, provide protection for civilian’s rights to free opinion and expression, not being subject to arbitrary detention and torture or ill-treatment.
