Short Link:
In the context of their continued procedures that aim to target civil society institutions in the OPTs, the Israeli forces prevented thirteen members of the Palestinian Legislative Council from reaching its assembly in Ramallah on Monday 9 September 2002.
It should be noted that these forces have not allowed the PLC to assemble in full, with all members, since the outbreak of the current Al Aqsa Intifada.
Considering the important role this Council plays in the Palestinian People’s lives, Al Mezan considers that Israel’s target here is the future of the people and the possibility of any normal development.
Al Mezan believes that the obstruction of the PLC assembly at this very specific time constitutes an Israeli attempt to affect the issues the PLC will decide upon.
These issues include the PLC and Presidential elections, ratification of the new government and reforms.
The Israeli government’s claim that they demand democratic reforms in the PA’s bodies are hereby proven false.
Israel uses such claims to misdirect the international public opinion.
Al Mezan gravely condemns these procedures against the Palestinian legislature and renews its demands of immediate international intervention and protection of the Palestinian civilians in the OPTs.
The international community is obliged to guarantee the implementation of the United Nations resolutions and human rights standards, which will lead to an independent Palestinian state.
