Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah survived an assassination attempt during his visit to Gaza this week.  Injuries were reported among the delegation and a number of the cars in the convoy were damaged.

Al Mezan’s documentation shows that the explosion went off at approximately 10am on Tuesday, 13 March 2018, as the Palestinian Premier’s convoy moved down Salah Eddin Street, near Al Shawa petroleum station in the town of Beit Hanon, northern the Gaza Strip.

The explosion damaged five vehicles in the convoy and security personnel opened fire intensively into the air. The local security forces in Gaza launched an investigation into the assassination attempt and detained a number of suspects.

Al Mezan expresses its strongest condemnation of the assassination attempt. The action is viewed as an effort to halt the faltering reconciliation efforts.

Al Mezan calls on the competent authorities to swiftly conduct a thorough investigation of the criminal incident and to make public the findings, notably since suspects have already been detained. The perpetrators must be brought to justice, and their goal of halting unity talks must not be realized.

Al Mezan commends the Palestinian Premier for stating that he would consider the assassination attempt as motivation to reinvigorate the unity efforts between the Palestinian governments. The statement thwarts efforts to hinder the legitimate Palestinian struggle for basic rights and freedoms.

Al Mezan calls on all groups and political parties to come together in order to unite the Palestinian government and bring an end to the damaging political split of the past ten years.
