Friday 19 July 2002, three persons shot and murdered Fadil Muhammad Hasan Yusif, known as as-Sarhad.
The incident took place near Al Zahraa town, south of Gaza City, just after the Friday prayers.
Yusif was in a jeep with his brother, Abdul Salam, and his nephew, taking the Imam Ahmad Hijazi from Ayyash mosque in the Mid Camps district to Gaza City.
Hijazi told Al Mezan fieldworkers the following: “We were near Al Nuseirat refugee camp when a man in a blue car directed us to stop.
We heard a sound of shooting but did not stop.
Abdul Salam, who was driving the jeep, took a side road and we reached the camp’s center.
One of the persons in the blue car ran and caught our window saying he knew Abdul Salam and asking him to stop the jeep, but he did not stop the jeep.
When we were on the beach road, I heard a sound of shooting and Fadil said he was wounded.
I showed my hand to the persons in the blue car with Fadil’s blood on it, and only then they stopped chasing us.
We went directly to Al Shifaa Hospital in Gaza City, where a doctor told us Fadil was dead.
”
Hijazi added that the three persons looked like civilians and wore civilian clothes and that the blue car did not carry any police signs.
He also said that he was not wanted for any security reasons, and neither were the Yusif brothers.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights views this incident as a new breach of the rule of law in the OPTs, especially as this is not the first time Palestinian civilians have been murdered in similar circumstances.
The Center calls on the Palestinian police to carry out an immediate investigation and reveal its results as soon as possible.
Al Mezan demands that the murderers be brought to justice according to Law.
We also repeat our previous demands to put an end to such incidents by reinforcing the rule of law in the Palestinian community.
