Al Mezan calls for investigation into Abu Mhadi's murder

19 August 2007

On Sunday 19 August 2007, 44-years-old Nimir Sulaiman Abu Mhadi was killed in ambiguous circumstances.
The victim had disappeared a week earlier, and no information about his whereabouts was available.
The victim's family told Al Mezan that they received a telephone call at dawn today and they were informed that their son was found near the former Israeli settlement of Nizarim, south of Gaza City.
When the family arrived at the scene, the victim was alive, but was fatally bleeding.
He was admitted to Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, where he died of his wounds.
According to Al Mezan's filed investigations, at 2am on Sunday 12 August 2007 Abu Mhadi received a call on his mobile phone and was invited to a place that is still unknown.
He left his house, which is located in Al Hassayna neighborhood in An-Nussirat Refugee Camp, shortly after the call and drove to that place.
He disappeared since then.
In the morning hours of the same day, his family found his empty jeep near the coastal road north of the Gaza Valley.
Sources at the autopsy department at Al Shifa hospital reported that the victim was tortured, as the bruises on his right shoulder indicate.
He was shot with a live bullet that penetrated his left knee.
He was also tightly handcuffed for long hours, the source added.
As a result, he suffered severe bleeding in his lower part of the body.
Al Mezan Center strongly condemns the murder of Abu Mhadi and subjecting him to torture and cruel treatment.
Al Mezan calls for a prompt, effective investigation into this crime and for bringing the perpetrators to justice.
