At approximately 10:45 pm on Friday 16 September 2011, two persons were killed and three others were injured, one of them critically, in connection with a feud between two families.
The violence took place near Imam Ash-Shaf’i mosque in the Az-Zaitoun neighborhood, east of Gaza City.
According to the field investigation carried out by the Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, a group of armed men from one family opened fire directly at a group from a related family, against the background of a feud between the two.
As a result, two persons were killed and three others were injured.
Al Mezan has identified the names of the persons killed as follows:
· Rami Fadel Kamal Foura, 30, and
· Abdallah ‘Awad ‘Adel Foura, 18.
Al Mezan has identified the names of the persons wounded as follows:
· Kamal Fadel Kamal Foura, 35(sustained critical injury and was referred to an Israeli hospital);
· Ahmed Fadel Kamel Foura, 26; and
· Kamal Fadel Kamal Foura, 33.
The police arrived at the scene, transferred some of the injured to the hospital, and arrested some of the perpetrators.
One of the suspects managed to flee.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights regrets the loss of lives due to the unlawful use of small arms.
Al Mezan expresses its concern about the use of small arms in family feuds, which has been one aspect of the absence of rule of law in the past.
Al Mezan calls on the Gazan government to promptly initiate effective and transparent investigations into the incident.
Those who are proven involved in such crimes must be brought to justice without delay.
Al Mezan warns against the misuse of small arms, which has grave consequences for the rule of law and human rights situations.
