On Monday 13 April 2009, Al Mezan Center received a Swedish diplomatic delegation including Ambassador Robert Rydberg, Deputy Director-General, Head the Middle East and North Africa Department at the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA); Mr.
Nils Eliasson, the Swedish Consul-General in Jerusalem; Ms.
Maria Velasco Ullenhag, Desk Officer in the Middle East and North Africa Department at the Swedish MFA; and Ms.
Anna Brodin, Consul/Political Affairs in the Swedish Consul-General in Jerusalem.
Mr.
Issam Younis, Director of Al Mezan, and Mr.
Mahmoud Abu Rahma, Communications and International Coordinator, met with the delegation.
They presented the current human rights and humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip; and especially in the context of the continuation of Israeli imposed closures of the Gaza crossings following the latest Israeli Occupation Forces’ invasion, in which around 1400 Palestinians were killed, and tens of thousands of homes and other premises destroyed.
Mr.
Younis also talked about Al Mezan’s work to defend human rights in the occupied Palestinian territory in the face of the challenges of human rights violations, a continued, prolonged occupation, siege and an internal division.
Mr.
Younis called on the delegation to give greater attention to resolving the Palestinian issue through upholding the right of Palestinians to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, in accordance with international law, when Sweden assumes the Presidency of the European Union in July 2009.
