Ex-detainee and retired Chief Police General Jaber Fadel al-Qeeq, 57, was shot death by unknown gunmen on Sunday, 12 July 2020, near his house in as-Saudi neighborhood in Tal as-Sultan, western Rafah.
According to the Ministry of Interior’s spokesperson in Gaza, the police has opened an urgent investigation into the incident and is looking for the assailants.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights strongly condemns the killing of al-Qeeq and the continued loss of life in internal violent incidents in Gaza. These types of incidents gravely undermine the safety and security of the population and increase cases of vigilantism, whereby people take the law into their own hands.
Al Mezan reiterates its call on the authorities to take serious measures, in particular to urgently limit the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, and calls on the relevant authorities to uphold the rule of law. A prompt, thorough and credible investigation must be conducted into the incident and the perpetrators must be held to account through a sound legal process.
