Al Mezan Concludes Annual Specialized Training for Young Lawyers

On Monday, 16 December 2019, Al Mezan Center for Human Rights concluded its annual specialized training for young lawyers, which aims at developing young graduates’ legal skills on an array of subjects, including Palestinian Law, International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law. In its sixteenth iteration, the training provided 32 young lawyers with 145 hours of theoretical lectures and 10 hours of practical training, during which the participants visited a number of detention and rehabilitation centers in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Rabee’ Juvenile Rehabilitation Institution.

 

Ms.  Shirin Al Shobaki, Training and Mass Communication Coordinator, who supervised the implementation of the training program thanked the participating lawyers for their commitment and outstanding performance during the training which in turn helped make the training a success. Ms. Al Shobaki expressed her hope that the course added to the participants’ both practical and theoretical knowledge, and stressed the importance of staying in touch with Al Mezan and taking part in its future activities. She added that Al Mezan would always welcome future cooperation opportunities with the participants.

 

Mr. Issam Younis, Al Mezan’s Director General, talked about the rapid developments affecting human rights situation, and the changes in the region which necessitate working to promote the culture of human rights and preserve human dignity. He also talked about the importance of this training in promoting the respect of the rule of law and raising awareness of law enforcement mechanisms. He emphasized that the purpose of the training was to not only develop legal skills of young lawyers but primary enhance their perception and broaden their understanding of several aspects of human rights so as to lay the foundations for their careers as human right defenders.

 

Mr. Younis highlighted the fundamental role that lawyers must play in ensuring that justice prevails which—in the context of the occupied Palestinian territory—requires mastery of international law and a firm understanding of human rights principles and standards. In conclusion, Mr. Younis thanked the young lawyers for their commitment and hoped the course met their expectations before handing out certificates of achievement to the participants who successfully completed the course.
