On Wednesday, 11 December 2019, Mr. Issam Younis, Director General of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights, welcomed Mr. Christian Clages, Head of Mission of the German Representative Office to the Palestinian Authority, and two political advisors to the Representative Office.
Mr. Younis discussed the deteriorating humanitarian and human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, particularly in the Gaza Strip, and raised concerns over the current humanitarian situation resulting mainly from the ongoing Israeli closure imposed on the Gaza Strip and accompanying restrictions on freedom of movement of individuals and goods.
The most recent developments in relation to the Palestinian political division were also addressed, especially its serious implications on the human rights situation locally. Mr. Younis stressed that the call for elections constitutes a confirmation of the unity of the occupied Palestinian territory, and presents an important opportunity for revitalizing the local political process and for citizen to hold politicians to account through the democratic process.
