Waleed Mohammed Salman, 24, was pronounced dead at the Reform and Rehabilitation detention center in northern Gaza district.
At approximately 6:00 am on Friday, 16 May 2014, Salman’s relatives received a phone call from the detention center informing them that Waleed was hospitalized at the Kamal Odwan Hospital in the district.
When the family arrived at the hospital, they were informed that Waleed had been pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the police spokesperson, Iyad Al Buzum, the body was subject to forensic examination and the cause of death was his heart stopped suddenly.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigations, Salman was detained as part of a criminal investigation on 10 March 2014.
He was in good health and was not suffering from any illness threatening his life.
Al Mezan Center for Human Rights regrets the death of Salman inside prison.
This is the second death of a person in detention inside this same detention center.
Every death incident inside a detention center must be investigated transparently, adequately and promptly.
Al Mezan calls on the concerned authorities to open a serious investigation into the incident in accordance with the relevant legal domestic and legal standards.
