Al Mezan Calls for Investigating Death of Detainee at Reform and Rehabilitation Center in North Gaza District

At approximately 7:00 am on Wednesday, 14 May 2014, Salah Mesleh Abu Hasheesh, 33, was pronounced dead at the Reform and Rehabilitation Center in northern Gaza.
According to the police spokesperson, Islam Shahwan, the body was subject to a forensic examination at Shifa Hospital and the cause of death was heart failure.
According to Al Mezan’s field investigation, Abu Hasheesh was detained as part of a criminal lawsuit.
Abu Hasheesh evaded for a period between November 2012 and April 2014, when he was imprisoned.
In the morning hours of Tuesday, 13 May 2014, Abu Hasheesh’s relatives visited him as usual.
At about 2pm on Wednesday, prisoners informed the police guard that there was something wrong with Abu Hasheesh.
When the police officers arrived, they found him in a critical state of health.
Abu Hasheesh was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
In their affidavit to Al Mezan, Abu Hasheesh’s relatives stated that he had enjoyed good health, that he was not suffering from an illness and that his death was unexpected.
Abu Hasheesh was a military officer with the Palestinian Authority National Security Apparatus.
He was married and had six children.

Al Mezan calls on the concerned authorities to open a serious investigation into the incident in accordance with international standards.
