The suffering of 4,610 Palestinian detainees continues with severe conditions in inadequately equipped detention centers.
According to the affidavits made by Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention centers to Al Mezan’s lawyer, the already difficult living conditions drastically worsen during cold weather where detainees at times remain without mattresses or blankets.
Some prisoners reported water flooding the tents in which they’re held and often wetting the blankets.
The Israeli prisons administration has been criticized for the lack of provision of necessary blankets, heaters and heavy clothing to detainees.
This widespread maltreatment amounts to violations of United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners issued in 1955, theBody of Principles for the Protectionof All Persons under Any Form of Detentionor Imprisonment adopted in 1988, the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War, and International Convention Against Torture 1948, which was ratified by the state of Israel in 1991.
The Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns the Israeli grave and systematic violations of international law committed against Palestinian detainees.
Al Mezan calls on the international community to promptly intervene and exert pressure on Israel to halt its violations against Palestinian detainees and ensure respect of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in dealing with Palestinian prisoners.
